On the Body and Blood of the Lord: The Eucharistic Treatises of Paschasius Radbertus and Ratramnus

This book will present the Latin text of the treatises of Paschasius Radbertus and Ratramnus (both at the monastery of Corbie in the 9th century) together with my English translations, a scholarly introduction, and extensive footnotes and bibliography.

This will be the first complete English translation of Radbertus and will also serve to make the difficult to find critical text of the Latin of Ratramnus widely available.

The introduction will detail the complicated and polemical history these two texts have had, both in later Medieval controversies and in Protestant and Catholic debates, while also highlighting the seemingly non-controversial provenance of the texts. That two texts could emerge at the same time and place with such different views of the Eucharist without causing much controversy indicates that what we have here may be a window on a privileged time in the history of doctrine when symbolist and realist views of the Eucharist could both be unproblematically held.

The book will be published by Dallas Medieval Texts and Translations.
