Dispatches: Notes from the Front Lines of Classical Education

While each visit is unique, and the talks I bring are tailored to that specific site, here are some excerpts from talks I have given at schools around the country, which provide a preview of the kind of content you can expect.

Love and Learning: Education as a Path to Wonder

I delivered this talk to parents and faculty at the Cambridge School of Dallas on February 4, 2025. In it, I argue that since the world is a place of wonder, we must educate our children to be a people of wonder.

Curiosity Killed Ignorance: The Secret to Lifelong Learning

This talk was delivered to faculty and parents at the Classical School of Dallas on February 3, 2025. It is an extended argument that curiosity is the chief intellectual virtue.

Liturgical Learning

A conversation between Junius, Christine Perrin, and Christopher Perrin about the rhythms of learning.

All Things Wise and Wonderful

This is an article I wrote for the Classical Difference magazine about helping children to grow into their sense of wonder.

Testimonials

Here’s what schools I have spoken at have to say about the visit:

It is a tremendous blessing to know there is someone I can rely on and trust completely to help build a truly classical program! To have Dr. Johnson at our professional development was not just a blessing to the school, it was a blessing to me personally. I could relax knowing that, with him at the wheel, the faculty were learning from a master.

Dr. Johnson reminded parents and teachers of our true nature as human beings: that we are made for immortality, to be sanctified in Christ for eternal life. In his encouraging and challenging talk, Dr. Johnson gave me new ways to approach Boethius’ The Consolation of Philosophy with my senior students, and he helped our parents see that our role is to form our children in Christlikeness. Junius’s talk was surprising in the best way. He defamiliarized some of the most familiar concepts in the Christian vocabulary (for example, sanctification as a mode of being rather than just fighting against sin) and reminded us that our task as parents and educators is to invite students to ‘come and see’ God’s good world and His good and true character.

Dr. Junius Johnson prepared and shared an amazing devotion for my staff to kickstart the school year. He incorporated our theme of Joy and gave us invaluable food for our souls and our classrooms! He brought an applicable AND inspirational message. His joy for teaching and learning is contagious!

At the end of a long day or stressful week, another professional development meeting is not always welcomed by faculty. Junius Johnson offers soul-refreshing words for faculty audiences, who need to be reminded that the love of their subject is key to capturing students’ hearts. His passion for the process of teaching draws you and inspires you to fully engage students, serving them as a muse for learning. Teaching as you ought, out of love, makes for the purposeful enculturation of students.

Alison Moffatt, Live oak classical school, texas

Junius Johnson’s visit to our school was an incredible blessing and experience. His expert knowledge of how education springs from the arc of the Western tradition was combined with his incredible ability to connect with our teachers on a personal level. Many of my teachers told me it felt as if Junius had been a member of our community for years. Going into February and the doldrums of the school year, the visit was perfect to lift the spirits of the faculty and reunite us around the vision of the Classical and Christian traditions.
